Quilt Basting

Two needlework projects this week. Easy background fill-in needlepoint on London of which I am enjoying immensely.

Secondly, there was prep work for board basting (not bored 😉)  the Red & White (RW) quilt which will later be machine quilted on my domestic.

This is the third quilt that I have done board basting which I learned from Sharon Schaumber's youtube video.  The boards give the three layers a nice weight and tension. You unroll the boards and baste each section as you go along. Sharon does an excellent job of explaining the process and reasons. Click here if interested in this method. I have set up a spare table in the guest bedroom which has natural daylight and a TV which keeps me from getting bored while board basting. 😉

The batting / wading is spread out on the bed in between the backing and top. Perhaps you can see the smoothness of the quilt which helps avoid potential puckers while basting. Many quilters use safety pins to baste. I prefer needle and thread. It goes quickly while working at table height.

There are other kindred stitchers linking today with Kathy at her weekly Slow Sunday Stitching.

Until next time,
Jill

I like it. I'll post the results when it is all basted.

I use pool noodles with a stick in the middle my honey sourced from his wood supply to keep them sturdy... I can pin right into the foam to hold each layer on when getting started :) Enjoy tv while you are basting and don't get bored girl <3 Have a happy Sunday!

What a fabulous way to baste a quilt. I watched the video; thank you for sharing the link, Jill. There is so much helpful information within it. Your London cross stitch is looking lovely and as for your red and white quilt; it is truly beautiful. Have a lovely week working on these two pretties.

I like this method also! No more crawling around on the floor

I have heard of pool noodles yet did not pay too much attention as I thought they would not be sturdy enough. Now I know the secret, add a piece of wood. Perhaps, I'll try next time. I'm enjoying the basting and its moving along nicely. Thanks, Kathi, for sharing another method and visiting! Have a good week!

It is a nice way to baste. I'm delighted you liked the video as Sharon does a great job explaining not only the hows but the whys. Today, I'm being a bit of a rebel on her instructions as I am basting with plain old quilting thread, and I start in the middle and work my way out to the sides. Visiting London is on the wish list. I thoroughly enjoyed your visit! Thanks!

Exactly! No more crawling on the floor. Perhaps I still could, but then I wouldn't be able to get up nor walk for about a week. Lol. This method is relaxing and it is going quickly. Thank you for visiting and commenting on this method!

London is looking good! I've heard of board basting but am going to save the link for future reference thank you.

Hopefully, there will be no puckers so I can machine quilt. The boards give the three layers some weight as I baste.
